Week 17

Math

In math this week, grade 5 students continued to complete long division processes, both with and without remainders, in order to solve problems.  Grade 6 students expanded their understanding of factors and multiples through the identification of prime and composite numbers.  Using their understanding, and strategies for determining, students created a number chart and identified all the prime and composite numbers under 100. Grade 6 students were also introduced to integers this week, and had an opportunity to both compare and order them.

Social Studies

This week in social studies, we looked at strategies for being a responsible citizen by actively and critically seeking out information from a variety of sources, and comparing perspectives on issues of importance. By reviewing online posts, students looked at two different perspectives of the same issue and experienced how their viewpoint could be shifted by online content.

 Learning outcomes for our lessons included:

• analyze how news and information can influence our opinion on people, events and issues;

• describe how algorithms personalize the information they see online;

• evaluate the pros and cons of receiving information through online platforms;
• describe strategies for being responsible consumers of information.

At the completion of activities, students shared their learnings and their expanded understanding of the information they view online.
