Week 23

 Pink Shirt Day

Anti-Bullying Day is an annual event, held in Canada and other parts of the world, where people wear a pink-coloured shirt to stand against bullying. Last Wednesday, students in grade 5/6 viewed a virtual session created by the grade 2/3 team, which had provided guidance on how to be an Upstander in situations of bullying. The students also watched a story called ‘The Invisible Boy’ and then came together as a class to determine what both inclusion and exclusion looks like, feels like, and sounds like. Individually, students then recorded a private and confidential pledge to reach out to someone in the class who may be feeling a bit ‘invisible.’

Math

In math this week, students worked on completing transformation rotations from both the vertex of a shape, as well as from a different point of rotation. Being provided with either a fractional amount, or with the degree of rotation, students rotated provided shapes on a coordinate grid based on instructions, and then identified the new vertex point on the grid.

ELA

In ELA this week, students started learning about interviewing skills in preparation for their news reporting.  Identifying techniques from a video featuring Katie Couric, students identified the following guidelines to enhance their video practice:

-       Be warm and welcoming to put your interviewee at ease

-       Use an appropriate tone for the topic

-       Explain what you need in the body of the question

-       Think about how they may answer and prepare a follow-up question to secure more details

-       Listen carefully as their response may require you to adjust your upcoming questions

-       Serve your audience by allowing your interviewee to share their information and allow them to communicate

Upon identifying these reporter skills, students then had the opportunity to practice by interviewing their peers and documenting their responses.

Science

Learning Objectives:

- I can recognize that the other 8 known planets, which revolve around the Sun, have characteristics and surface conditions that are different from Earth.

- I can identify examples of those differences and compare two planets.

In Science this week, students chose a planet they were interested in researching. To begin we watched two videos and identified which planets fell under the “Rocky Planets” and which fell under the “Gas Giant” categories. During the research process, students are working to locate information about their planet's size, composition, atmosphere, average surface temperature, moons and distance from the Sun. Once the research is complete, students will prepare a slideshow presentation that they will present to their classmates.
