Hello Ramsay Families!
This week was another great one ! Here are a few reminders of upcoming events:
- Conferences will take place Thursday, September 23rd and Friday September 24th. Conference manager is now open, so please make sure to sign up. We are looking forward to connecting with families!
- The Terry Fox Run will take place next Friday, September 17th. You are welcome to send a toonie for Terry with your child, but please know this is not mandatory.
- Please return all forms back to the school with your child as soon as possible.
This week we revisited The Tree in Me anchor text and used it as a jumping off point for our inquiry about Alberta trees and forests. We watched this video, which inspired a great conversation about how forests and communities of people share many similar characteristics.

Here are some of the ideas that came up in our discussion:
- They both have families.
- They communicate with one another.
- They rely on each other.
- They look out for each other and warn each other of dangers.
- They support one another.
-They are interconnected and impact one another.
In Science we are learning about Alberta's trees and forests. Today we learned the difference between coniferous and deciduous trees. Coniferous trees have cones and needles that protect them all year round. The word deciduous means " to fall off," and every fall they shed their leaves. These trees can also grow flowers, berries or winged "helicopters" that spread their seeds. In groups, we looked at common Alberta trees and had to identify which trees fell under each category. Our next steps will be to locate and identify some of the trees in our local environment.
Social Studies
During our social studies this week, students learned how our democracy is made up of elected representatives, and that each level of government has both shared and distinct roles and responsibilities. Students also explored how government affect them directly, and they created a visual comic to identify how government impacts their daily lives.
Next week, students will be looking directly at the political parties and assessing which party best aligns with their own views and values. Through online tools, including ‘Pollenize Canada’ and ‘Vote Compass,’ students will be comparing party platforms in advance of the September 20th student vote.

Math
In math this week, students began working with number patterns and demonstrated their understanding of the following learning objectives:
- I can extend a given pattern and explain how each element differs from the preceding one.
- I can describe and record the pattern rule for a given numerical pattern.
Grade 6 students also began identifying and comparing two sets of patterns and identifying the relationship within a chart.
What a great learning week!
