Week 4

Hello Grade 5/6 Ramsay Families!

We had another great week!  Just a few reminders on upcoming events:

- September 29th is Orange Shirt Day, so please encourage your child to wear orange if possible.

-September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation so schools and offices are closed.

Social Studies

On Monday, September 20th, students across the country participated in Student Vote Canada, in which they ‘voted’ for their chosen party representative from within the Calgary Centre riding. After reviewing the political platforms for each party based on twelve key issues, students then cast their ballot.

After class election tallies were calculated, and the national results were reported, we calculated our percentage results and compared them to the popular vote in the Calgary Centre riding.

Math

In math this week, students had the opportunity to organize, chart and compare real-life data based on the results of the national Student Vote and the federal election results.  Learning how to compare similar data sets, students practiced calculating percentages and looked to create double-bar graphs in order to display comparative data.

Our focused learning objectives included:

·       Differentiating between first-hand and second-hand data.

·       Constructing and interpreting double bar graphs to draw conclusions

·       Demonstrating an understanding of percentage symbolically

Provided with second-hand data from online sources, students were able to extract relevant results in order to determine which data sets they wanted to chart and graph.  Students chose one of the following options:

·       Compare actual percentage riding election results against total student vote results from all schools in the riding.

·       Compare actual percentage riding election results against Ramsay class results

·       Compare the student vote results in the riding versus the Ramsay class results

·       National Student Vote results versus actual national election results

·       Compare different school vote results in the same riding (e.g. Ramsay versus Elboya)

·       Compare the popular vote results between 2019 and 2021 election

Science Learning Intention: I can describe and classify leaf shapes, leaf arrangements, branching patterns and the overall form of a tree.

This week, we started our work with describing and classifying leaves. To begin, students were given a leaf that was found in our school yard. We discussed the similarities and differences and brainstormed words we could use to describe them. Students were then introduced to specific categories and characteristics that foresters use when describing leaves. After completing a classroom example together, students went on a leaf hunt using this guide to locate, sketch and classify leaves found in their local community.

Here is the guide students used to describe and classify the leaves they found:
