Level up, Calgary! Community Reimagined, Reconfigured, Revitalized

The CBE is pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with Microsoft, The City of Calgary, and The Calgary Public Library (CPL). Through this partnership, the CBE will deliver an engaging and immersive educational opportunity for CBE students that leverages the power of Minecraft: Education Edition.

On October 8, students in grades 4-6 were introduced to a customized virtual representation of downtown Calgary. Once they begin to navigate through the Minecraft city, they will interact with city experts as they consider the provocation, “How might we reimagine our public spaces to enrich the lives of Calgarians and strengthen our community?”

Working with partners or a in a small group, students will work on an interdisciplinary task connected with the program of studies as they build a virtual proposal in Minecraft that represents their vision for Calgary’s future.

Math

In math this week, students designed, constructed and compared different rectangles for either a given perimeter or area. In determining possible perimeter configurations, students shared strategies for calculating different length combinations. Their goal was to create as many configurations with the same total perimeter. In working on area, students learned how to factor a number in order to determine all the possible multiplication combinations in order to construct different rectangle configurations for the same total area value.

Social

This week in Social Studies, students finished their final research on Daylight Savings Time. Once they had compiled a list of reasons and examples, students were introduced to the purpose and features of persuasive writing. Using examples as a model, students then combined their ideas for the debate into several persuasive sentences. Students then had an opportunity to ‘persuasively’ present their ideas in class before completing their final vote on the referendum question.

Language Arts: Reading Instruction

Learning intention:

I can construct and confirm meaning of texts I am reading.

I can make predictions and inferences related to events, characters, setting and main ideas in texts I am reading.

This week we focused on the predictions reading strategy. We started by reviewing what a prediction was and how it helps readers to deepen their understanding of texts they are reading. Making predictions is a core reading skill that supports and strengthens students overall comprehension.

We started the lesson by reviewing and modelling the following reading strategies:

Preview the cover art, title, author and illustrations.
  • Flip through the text to preview the visuals.
  • Preview the text and consider text structure, setting, characters, problem, character’s feelings and motives, events and themes.
  • Consider whether the author’s purpose is to entertain, inform or persuade.
  • Return to predictions both during and after reading to confirm and revise them.
  • Use sentence frame, “I think this is about ___________ because____________.
  •  “I think this will happen because ___________________________. "

In order to practice this skill, we read the book "Two Bad Ants, " by Chris Van Allsburg. Students were asked to make predictions orally during our read aloud. They were provided with sentence frames and guided to include relevant text evidence and personal connections to support their thinking. Next week, we will continue to practice this skill using another picture book and students will co-create a rubric that will support them to assess their understanding of this core reading skill.

Science: Interpreting Growth Patterns

Learning Intentions:  I can Interpret the growth pattern of a young tree, distinguishing this year’s growth from that of the previous year and from the year before that.

This week, we discussed how scientists can use the cross-section of a tree truck to infer the events in the life of a tree. We watched the video below, before taking a look and using our inferencing skills to analyze a few sample pictures.
