Community Walk

During our community walk on Monday, we observed many seasonal changes within the plants and trees since our last walk. Students were assigned specific tasks connected to our Science curriculum. They were asked to sit quietly by the river and to observe the weather and cloud patterns that were present that day. In addition, students were asked to consider the question, “How does bark change from tree to tree?” Students created bark rubbings of 4 different trees and included descriptive vocabulary to add to their scientific drawings. We will use these drawings to support the identification of trees in our local community.

Here are our specific learning intentions for our walk:

     -  I can observe, describe and interpret weather phenomena.

  • - I can describe characteristics of trees and the interaction of trees with other living things in the local environment.

  • - I can engage in learning with confidence and persistence ( Personal Development in Learning).

After our walk, students were asked to reflect upon the following success criteria that demonstrated their personal development in learning.

This week in writing, students began a new assignment for Remembrance Day.  Using first-person, students started to draft either a letter or a poem (their choice) incorporating both a

simile and a metaphor.  Learning objectives for our writing task includes:

-       I can enhance meaning of created texts by using word choice and literary techniques

-       I can use characteristics from familiar texts as models for producing own texts

-       I can identify first and third person narration

In math this week, we began our Number Sense unit with the exploration of place value with whole numbers up to 1 000 000. Students represented numbers in both standard and expanded form, and described them using number words.  Students also had an opportunity to compare numbers through the reinforcement of game play with dice.

Health

In health this week, we focused on wellness with a review of personal boundaries.  Exploring the differences between physical, emotional and mental boundaries, students learned how boundaries can be established to help protect themselves and their wellbeing.
