Week 10

Hello Ramsay Families,

This week our class had a chance to connect with Monica Ila, our Ramsay School Fence Artist, to discuss the upcoming project and to ask questions about the process. On Monday, October 8th, our class will be painting our contribution for the collaborative project. Please ensure that your child has painting clothes for that day, as the paint is meant to endure the elements of the outdoors and therefore would be very difficult to remove from clothing.

 Reminders:

We will continue to collect donations for the Veterans Food Bank until Wednesday, October 10th.

In honour of Remembrance Day, there is no school on Thursday, November 11th and Friday, November 12th is a non-instructional day for students.

Remembrance Day

We only have a few days left to collect nonperishable and personal items for the Veteran’s Food Bank. If you still are able to contribute items, please send them to school with your child this week. We will continue collecting items until Wednesday, November 10th.

Thank you in advance for supporting this worthy cause.

ELA – Writing

This week, most students finished their writing for Remembrance Day. Applying a first-person perspective from a specific time frame in history, students wrote either a letter or a poem (their choice) and incorporated both a simile and a metaphor.  Learning objectives for our writing task included:

- I can enhance meaning of created texts by using word choice and literary techniques.

- I can use characteristics from familiar texts as models for producing own texts.

- I can identify first and third person narration.

Several students will have the opportunity to read their poem or letter during our upcoming Remembrance Day ceremony on Wednesday, November 10th.

ELA – Reading

During our reading blocks this week, students continued to work on predictions, where they used text evidence and information from the text, along with their prior knowledge, to make logical predications before and during reading. Looking at short story videos, students were making their observations, predicting and recording text evidence, which they then would revise as they gained additional information. Throughout the process, students continued to revise and document the text evidence.

- I can use prior experiences and text evidence to predict the theme or connecting motives or ideas.

- I can provide character motives or empathize with the character to explain predictions.

- I can explain why predictions and inferences were revised using specific evidence from the text.

 Math

In math this week, grade 5 students worked on whole number addition strategies, as well as were introduced to decimal place value (up to thousandths place). Grade 6 students also reviewed decimal place value and worked to practice comparing and ordering values.

Minecraft Design Challenge: How might we reimagine our public spaces to enrich the lives of Calgarians and strengthen our community?”

On Monday, we went on a community walk to visit the new inclusive park in Ramsay. The Minecraft Design Challenge, requires students to design a public space that enriches the lives of Calgarians. In order to fully understand the implications of this task, students were given the opportunity to observe and take note of a public space in their community and to reflect on how spaces like these enhance the quality of life of people living in communities across Calgary.

The next day, we reviewed our observations and students shared their journal entries and reflections about this public spaceWe then discussed how the park reflected the 4 pillars of the City’s Downtown Strategy (Place, Live, Work and Connect). Click the link below to read more about this important aspect of the design challenge.

Students were then ready to revisit the first draft of their planning document and reflect on how their design embodied these pillars. Now that the plans are complete, students will be spending the next few weeks working on building their designs in the Minecraft world modeled after downtown Calgary.
