Week 12

 Hello Ramsay Families,

Reminders: Conference Manager is still open to book a student conference, if you have not already done so. Please take a few moments to schedule a time for either Thursday, November 25th or Friday, November 26th.   If you require any assistance in booking, please do not hesitate to contact the office.

Math

In math this week, grade five students finished their current learning on the addition and subtraction of decimals to the thousandths place value. Students were also introduced to problem-solving vocabulary to assist them in deciphering and identifying the required operation in order to solve word problems.

Gr. 5 Learning Intentions:

- I can solve problems involving whole numbers and decimal numbers.

- I can use estimation strategies in problem-solving contexts.

Grade six students continued their work on the multiplication of decimals by a single whole number before moving into a review on the steps to complete long division equations.  Students reviewed the theory and process in determining a quotient by solving 3-digit dividends by 1-digit divisors. Students will be moving on to the long division process involving decimals next week.

Gr. 6 Learning Intentions:

- I can demonstrate an understanding of multiplication and division of decimals

To support our work in the development of fact fluency and automaticity, students will begin targeted quizzing on specific multiplication and division facts each week for the remainder of the year.

Minecraft

This week, students are putting the finishing touches on their designs for the City of Calgary Level Up Minecraft Challenge! Students in grade 5/6 are also working on writing small expository paragraphs as they highlight and explain key elements of their design.  Incorporating both an introductory and closing sentence, along with persuasive writing, student groups will be collaborating to create a strong ‘pitch’ for their design. Next week, each student group will present their designs to their individual classrooms. The Grade 4/5 and the Grade 5/6 classes will then vote on the top design for their class. Then, Ramsay staff will get to vote between the 2 final designs to see which one will be presented to the city as our school’s submission!

Please stay tuned for additional details and final results in the coming few weeks!

Social Studies

In our social studies lesson this week, students discussed the rights they have at school as an entry point to explore the rights and freedoms in a democracy. Students were then introduced to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and looked at examples of its application through the review of real-world examples. Students were then given the opportunity to reflect upon the responsibilities that come with our rights. We will continue to explore these concepts, and application to our daily lives, in the coming weeks as students work to create a poster to display and communicate Canadian rights and responsibilities to our school community.

Our learning outcomes included:

- I can analyze examples of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and apply them to real-world examples.

- I can make connections between rights and responsibilities.

Science

Science Learning Objectives:

  • I can record weather over a period of time.

  • I can observe, describe and interpret weather phenomena.

Math Learning Objectives:

  • I can construct and interpret double bar graphs to draw conclusions.

  • I can create, label and interpret line graphs to draw conclusions.

This week in Science, we officially began our study of weather. We discussed the difference between weather and climate and discussed common weather sayings such as, “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight.”  Do you use any “weather sayings?” We would love to hear them!

Additionally, students reviewed the water cycle and its’ role in weather patterns. The cycling of water in and out of the atmosphere is a significant aspect of the weather patterns on earth.

Finally, students have been checking and recording the high and low temperatures each day. We used this data to create a double bar graph to display our findings. Next week, we will use the same datand learn how to create a line graph in order to organize and display the same information.
