In ELA this week, students applied figurative language approaches, such as personification and onomatopoeia, to writing their nature poem about the Rocky Mountains. As students worked through the assignment, they used a writing checklist to ensure they included all the necessary criteria:

 Math

In math this week, students continued to work on determining the product of 2-digit numbers using the traditional algorithm. Using the process to calculate the final product, students began dissecting multiplication word problems to determine the important information, and what final question was being asked. Problems included single-step and multiple-step in which students had to break the problem into parts, and then demonstrate their strategy for solving each component to reach the final answer

Example problems included:

On Monday, students worked with Clay for Kids to create a fused glass art piece around our school wide theme: The Tree in Me. Students were invited to create a tree that represented them, using either cool or warm colours. There were many beautiful pieces, and we are really looking forward to seeing the finished products! Here are a few pictures from our experience.

Learning Objectives:

  • I can identify some common types of clouds and relate them to weather patterns.

  • I can describe the effects of the Sun’s energy on daily and seasonal changes in temperature— 24-hour and yearly cycles of change.

In Science this week, we learned how clouds form and how they affect weather patterns. Students were presented with information about 4 different types of clouds and asked to summarize the information by taking notes. Students will use these notes to complete a quiz next week in class.

Cloud Types

  • - Cirrus Clouds

  • - Stratus Clouds

  • - Cumulus Clouds

  • - Nimbus Clouds

Students were then asked to brainstorm everything they knew about the seasons. They were then divided into groups and each group was responsible for taking notes about one vocabulary word. After the video, studentcompared notes and then all groups presented their findings in order to build an understanding of how different hemispheres have different weather patterns ( seasons).
