Week 16

 ELA, Social Studies & Art

In class this week, students finished their latest poem using several literacy techniques including personification, onomatopoeia and alliteration. The inspiration for their poem was based on the Rocky Mountains and their learning of the Interior Plains in social studies.  As students worked through the assignment, they used a writing checklist to ensure they included all the necessary criteria:

-       I can enhance meaning of created texts by using appropriate word choice and figurative language

-       I can use characteristics from familiar texts as models for producing own texts

-       I can use conventions (spelling, punctuation and capitalization) appropriately in my own writing.

In addition to writing, students also completed a mountain landscape in art. To support our learning of perspectives, shadow and tone, we looked at the work of a local artist Jason Carter https://www.carter-ryan.com/ as a model for our own work.  Student goals in working on their sketch and final painting included:

-       I can use models to make drawings with increased accuracy.

-       I can indicate perspective in drawing.

-       I can mix and use colour tones to achieve perspective and shadow.

-       I can develop craftmanship through the economical use of material.

Math

In math this week, students in grade 5 reviewed the concept of division and began to look at long division processes in order to determine the quotient of a 3-digit number by 1-digit divisor.

Grade 6 expanded their knowledge of double-digit multiplication by determining the product of whole and decimal numbers.

Science/Community Walk

On Monday, students went on a community walk along the river pathway. Their task was to record their observations about the weather, temperature and cloud coverage that day. Additionally, they were given time to reflect on the Winter Solstice, by documenting specific observations and seasonal changes along their walk. They then wrote a poem that reflected the importance of this shift in the seasons.
