Week 20

Math

In math this week, students worked on correctly identifying and labeling line segments, angles and triangle vertices. Provided with two side measurements, and one angle, students then measured and created the required angles and triangles

Reading

In reading groups this week, students began to work on questioning strategies as a means to develop and improve their comprehension. Students pause before, during, and after reading in order to think more deeply about the text. Students also worked to determine and identify if their questions were explicit or implicit, meaning they were moving from direct text dependent answers to inferencing ‘how’ and ‘why.’  Students then revisited their questions as they progressed through the short text, to see if they could either find or determine their answer by ‘reading between the lines.’

Social Studies

Being able to tell what is fact and what is fiction online has become an essential skill of citizenship in the digital age. We need to think critically about what we see, learn the tools to fact-check information, develop the habits to verify stories and claims, and establish a trusted list of sources.  In social studies this week, students participated in an online interactive game, FakeOut, (https://newsliteracy.ca/fakeOut/) which gave them a chance to assess their ability to detect false information before and after learning the tricks of verification. By the end of the lesson, students were able to:

  • - explain why it is important to check information before they believe or share it;

  • - describe the skills they can use to check a source, claim or image;

  • - apply the fact-checking skills to the information they see online.

Ramsay Carnaval will take place Tuesday, February 8!

In French this week, students worked in groups to create and design games for our winter carnival. As a large group, we decided on three activities to plan for our school community. Students then worked collaboratively in groups to determine what materials would be needed and then wrote out the instructions on how to play. On Monday, we will set up our games and make any last-minute adjustments before we pass along the instructions to teachers.

Group #1: Hockey Relay

Hockey and skating are popular activities during Carnaval. Students have created a mini relay race for students to participate in.

Group #2: Bonhomme’s Quest

This game was modeled after the popular “Course en Canot” where teams attempt to cross the ice and snow of the St-Lawrence River.  Students will work in teams to complete a small obstacle course.

Group #3: Bonhomme’s Secret Message

For this activity, we will hide Bonhomme stickers around the playground for students to find. Each sticker will have a number and each number represents a letter. Students will be asked to work collaboratively with their teacher and classmates to find all of the stickers in order to figure out Bonhomme’s secret message.
