Week 36

Math

In math this week, students continued to work on developing their knowledge of fractions by representing these numbers in different ways.

·       Grade 5 students practiced by changing a base-ten fraction to an equivalent decimal through their knowledge of place value below 0.  Students also completed the reverse process by representing a decimal value up (to the thousandths) place as a fraction.

·       Grade 6 students worked on improper fractions this week, and looked to calculate its mixed number equivalent by determining how many times the larger numerator could be divided by the denominator.

Students also completed this reverse process as they then looked at how to represent a mixed number equivalent to an improper fraction.

Social Studies

In social studies this week, we investigated the different roles that Haudenosaunee men and women played in collectively contributing to their village and nation. Students also looked at the scared role of the clan mother and discussed the importance to the leadership of her clan.

Lastly, students also had an opportunity to apply their knowledge of the Iroquois consensus-building process in order to determine their final graduation theme.  Participating in a ‘Grand Council,’ students were placed in one of the original five nations (Mohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Cayuga and Onondaga) and role-played the process in order to reach a final decision. Throughout the experience, students had an opportunity to experience the advantages and disadvantages of a decision-making model.

Note: our graduation theme is MEDIEVAL FAIR

 Science

In science this week, students learned the main parts of an aircraft as well as the appropriate vocabulary in referring to the control surfaces and major components of an aircraft. Students were asked to read an informational passage and then summarize the information to describe their understanding. Additionally, students were introduced to the concepts of pitch, roll and yaw and how the parts of an airplane create these movements.

  1. Rhyan enjoyed the democratic vote for the graduation theme- such a great real-world learning experience! Will the graduation start/finish times on Jun. 27 be available soon, so that we can book time off at work? Looking forward to the celebration!
