Week 25

ELA

This week in English Language Arts, students finalized their interview questions based on their chosen learning topic, and then visited different classrooms to conduct their interview of teachers and students.  Meetings were videotaped, and students will now be using their gathered content to draft their news articles this week.  Students were also introduced to the grammatical rules for adding quotes to the additional information portion of their article, so they are able to include the exact responses of the students and teachers they spoke to.

Math

In math this week, grade 5 students completed hands-on activities which included locating and drawing 2D shapes and 3D objects within the classroom.  They then applied their learning of geometric vocabulary by identifying and labeling sides that were parallel, intersecting, perpendicular, vertical and horizontal.  Additionally, students build prisms and pyramids to identify the number of vertices, edges and faces. Grade 6 students were also included in the learning of geometric terminology and additionally looked at the concept of congruence between regular and irregular polygons.

 Science

This week in science, we continued our work with evidence and investigation. Before diving into learning about collecting and analyzing evidence, we focused on what skills are important for police officers and forensic investigators to have. Here are the three most important skills:

• Being observant

• Remaining objective

• Using inference

We then moved on to fingerprinting. Did you know that there are 4 main types of fingerprinting patterns? Additionally, we learned that no two people have the same fingerprint, therefore police officers can use fingerprints to link suspects to a crime. Students really enjoyed looking closely at their specific patterns and comparing them with friends. They then completed a fingerprinting activity using tape and their pencils.
