Ramsay Newspaper

Over the course of the last few months, students in grade 5/6 worked diligently towards learning the structure of newspaper articles and how to communicate important factual information through the 5Ws, quotes and additional content.

Dissecting each part of article examples, students first began by looking at headlines and hook sentences as a way to introduce a topic and garner interest from their audience. They then evaluated article exemplars to create a criterion that would support their writing of strong paragraphs. For the next few weeks, students were provided with several opportunities to write and edit lead paragraphs before beginning a news story of their own.

Using our own school community as inspiration, students in grade 5/6 decided to interview teachers and students so they could report on the learning events occurring throughout Ramsay classrooms. In preparation for their article writing students first needed to learn about, and develop, interviewing skills before acting as ‘news reporters’ from our classroom. Upon identifying key reporter skills, students had the opportunity to practice by interviewing their peers and documenting their responses.

In final preparation for their teacher and student interviews, students collaborated to create a class list of possible questions to ensure they determined the who, what, where, when, why and how for their news article. Once completed, students then refined their list based on their chosen topic before visiting different classrooms to conduct their interviews. Interviews were videotaped and students used their gathered content to draft their news articles.

Following an organizational template, students created a lead paragraph and additional information paragraphs to share and communicate the classroom learning. Students were also introduced to the grammatical rules for adding quotes so they were able to include the exact responses of the students and teachers they spoke to.

For their final draft, students also utilized an editing checklist before finally submitting their article to their news editor (teacher).  At last, when final feedback was provided, students then transferred their written piece into a final publishing template, which was either the Ramsay Herald or the Ramsay Post depending on their news publication. Throughout this entire project, students worked towards, and met several curricular ELA learning objectives. Please enjoy reading the following news articles, which outline some of the learning that occurred during the month of February at Ramsay School.
