Week 29

 Music

We are very excited to have the opportunity to view the Calgary Opera's virtual presentation of Dean Burry's The Brothers Grimm next week This virtual opera is performed by the McPhee Artist Development Ensemble with Musical Direction by Mel Kirby. We will be viewing it during music class and we will be discussing the various parts of the Opera including singing parts, opera terminology, and how an opera contains a variety of forms of musicWe are very fortunate that Calgary Opera offers this presentation free of charge to our schoolsHopefully your child will be able to share with you all about the opera at the end of next weekIf you have any questions, feel free to contact Mrs. Serra at jeserra@cbe.ab.ca

ELA

In ELA this week students have started learning about stories, and the importance of ‘showing and not telling’ when you are writing. Our goal this week was to work on our descriptive writing that supported the visualization of a readerStudents worked on a variety of tasks that included identifying the senses of a scene (e.g. sight, sound, smell, taste, touch & feel), as well as writing descriptive sentences about an object, without naming it, and then requiring a peer to guess it. Students also acted out a scene from Princess Smarty-pants, in which they played either Prince Arrogant or Prince Scaredy-Pants, while their partner wrote a small narrative describing their facial expression, body movements and actions.

 Math

In math this week students finished a final task assessing their understanding around the process to calculate the perimeter, area of a 2D shape and volume of a rectangular prism. We then began a new unit on patterns & equations in which we began to look at the process for solving both addition and subtraction algebraic equations. Examples include: 76 = 23 + b / d – 11 = 35 / 40 – c = 16

Physical Education - Three Left Feet Dance Residency

Students finished their two-week dance residency on Thursday, culminating in a final dance routine. Students had a great time throughout the program, which included both warm-up activities and cool down routinesWe are looking forward to sharing our final dance with you once the video has been completed.

Science: What is chromatography?

Paper chromatography is a technique used to separate and identify substances that are coloured, like ink from a marker or pen. The separation of the components can create a unique pattern, allowing for comparison between a known sample with unknown samples. Chromatography is not a very common form of evidence, but can be useful in specific crimes, as it can provide effective information and lead to a suspect’s arrest. In this specific case, students were told that a note had been left at a crime scene and were asked to figure out which writing utensil had been used.

Before starting our experiment, we discussed and reviewed the scientific process and the roles of variables.

Manipulated/Independent: The one thing or aspect of the experiment that you change throughout the experiment.

Responding/Dependent: What will change or happen in response to the manipulated variable?

Controlled: The things or aspects that will stay the same for every trial of the experiment.

Question:

How do you predict each marker will separate?

Will some markers separate into more than one colour?

In conclusion, students observed that each marker responded differently, as seen in the picture below.

In French, students finished up their “Animal perdu” posters to conclude our unit on animals. Our next unit will focus on learning vocabulary to describe common rooms in our homes.

Learning Intentions:

  • - I used words and phrases that make it easy for others to identify my lost pet.

  • - I included important information for others to be able to contact me if they find my lost pet.
