Week 33

 Math

In math this week, students continued their work on probability, and their learning included:

-       designing and conducting a probability experiment in which the likelihood of a single outcome occurring was impossible, possible or certain.

-       conducting a given probability experiment a number of times, recording the outcomes, and explaining the results.

Social Studies

In social studies, we are continuing our investigation of historical models of democracy, and are beginning to look at the structure of the Iroquois Confederacy. Haudenosaunee is the name that the people of the Six Nations call themselves. French settlers called them “Iroquois,” and historical documents also use “Iroquois.” We began our unit this week by looking at the brief history of the Confederacy, which had been initially been at war with one another. However, we’ve learned that the initial five Iroquois nations actually had much in common with one another including their homes, their social structure, and their daily life.

Science

Learning Intentions:

  • - I can describe and demonstrate instances in which air movement across a surface results in lift— Bernoulli’s principle.

  • - I can recognize that in order for devices or living things to fly, they must have sufficient lift to overcome the downward force of gravity.

In science this week, students reviewed Bernoulli’s principle and tested it through a few simple experiments.

After we reviewed Bernoulli's principle, students were introduced to the 4 forces of flight: lift, thrust, gravity (weight) and drag. Flying animals and aircrafts are specially designed to achieve enough lift to overcome weight and enough thrust to overcome drag. Next steps, students will be asked to examine how streamlining reduces drag and will be asked to predict, then test the effects of specific changes on the drag of a model aircraft. To achieve this, students will experiment with flying a streamlined dart vs. one with rear flaps that create drag.
